From Skateboarding to Swiss Lathes: The Story of Julian Klein and JK Design

What began with skateboards has become a thriving precision machine shop in the heart of California. JK Design, founded by Julian Klein, is a story of curiosity, craftsmanship, and the pursuit of excellence — one that perfectly embodies the spirit of modern American manufacturing.

Where It All Began

Long before JK Design was machining parts on Citizen Swiss lathes, Julian’s creativity found expression in the skateboarding world. As a teenager, he was designing and fabricating skate ramps — learning about angles, structure, and materials without realizing those same skills would later serve him in precision machining.

That hands-on experience turned into a love for making things that move, fit, and function perfectly. Eventually, Julian pursued machining as a career, starting small and learning every aspect of the trade through experience and mentorship.

Building JK Design

What started as a one-person operation has grown into a full-fledged machine shop specializing in tight-tolerance components for a variety of industries. JK Design has become known for its creative approach to machining challenges and commitment to continuous improvement.

Julian attributes much of that success to the willingness to adapt — whether it’s experimenting with new materials, refining setups for efficiency, or investing in advanced equipment that supports both precision and creativity.

Why Citizen Swiss Lathes

When it came time to expand, Julian looked for machines that could deliver accuracy, reliability, and versatility. His search led him to Citizen Swiss lathes — known for their precision and efficiency in producing complex parts.

With support from Spinetti Machinery, JK Design added its first Citizen machine, marking a major step forward in capability. “The difference was immediate,” Julian said. “It opened up what we could take on as a shop.”

From prototyping to production, the Citizen platform gave JK Design the freedom to explore new designs and push the boundaries of what’s possible in small-part manufacturing.

Partnership with Spinetti Machinery

As JK Design has grown, so has its partnership with Spinetti Machinery. From installation to technical support and ongoing training, the collaboration reflects a shared dedication to helping American manufacturers succeed.

“Spinetti has been there every step of the way,” Julian said. “They don’t just sell machines — they support your success.”

Looking Ahead

Today, JK Design stands as an inspiring example of how creativity and craftsmanship can intersect in manufacturing. For Julian, it’s about more than making parts — it’s about building a future where precision, art, and innovation continue to meet.
